How to Size a Futures Position: The Only Formula You Need

Most blown accounts are a sizing problem, not a strategy problem

Two traders can take the exact same setup, with the same entry and the same stop, and one ends the month up while the other is looking for a new prop firm. The difference is almost never the entry. It is how many contracts each of them put on.

Position sizing is the one decision that turns a normal losing trade into an account-ending event. Get it right and a string of losses is an annoyance. Get it wrong and a single stop-out is a catastrophe. The good news: sizing is pure arithmetic. There is one formula, it never changes, and once you internalize it you never have to guess your contract count again.

The formula

Everything flows from one number: the dollars you are willing to lose on this trade. Call it your risk amount. Then:

stop distance (points) = | entry price − stop price |
risk per contract      = stop distance × point value
contracts              = floor( risk amount ÷ risk per contract )

Three things worth stressing:

  • Point value is per contract and fixed by the exchange. It is not negotiable and it is not the same across products (see the table below).
  • Always round down. If the math says 2.8 contracts, you trade 2. Rounding up means risking more than your budget — the exact mistake sizing is supposed to prevent.
  • Your actual risk is contracts × risk per contract, which will be at or under your budget. Never over.

Point values you need to know

The micro contracts (MNQ, MES, MGC) are one-tenth the size of their e-mini parents. That is what makes them the right tool for small accounts and for sizing precisely — you can dial risk in far more granularly than with a single e-mini.

Worked example

You want to buy NQ at 20,000.00 with a stop at 19,950.00, and you are willing to lose $200 on the trade.

stop distance    = | 20,000 − 19,950 | = 50 points
risk per contract = 50 × $20            = $1,000
contracts         = floor( $200 ÷ $1,000 ) = 0

Zero. A single NQ contract on a 50-point stop risks $1,000 — five times your budget. This is the calculation that saves accounts: it tells you before you click that this trade, at this size, does not fit your risk. Your options are to widen the budget, tighten the stop, or drop to the micro. On MNQ the same 50-point stop risks only $100 per contract, so a $200 budget buys you 2 contracts. Same idea, right-sized instrument.

Add a target to see reward:risk

Sizing tells you how much. Reward:risk tells you whether it is worth it. If you also know your target:

reward distance = | target − entry |
reward : risk   = reward distance ÷ stop distance
potential profit = contracts × reward distance × point value

A trade risking 50 points to make 100 is a 2:1 — you can be right less than half the time and still come out ahead. A 0.5:1 needs you to win two-thirds of the time just to break even. Knowing this number before the entry is what separates a plan from a hope.
